The United States Rail Board approved wage reductions of ten cents an hour for railroad bank workers and nine cents for carmen, affecting about 400000 workers and saving roughly 59.7 million dollars annually. The July effective date followed last week’s 50 million wage cut for maintenance workers.
Mr and Mrs W E Beacham of York arrived in Abbeville for a visit to Mrs B K Graham and Mr and Mrs W E Hanson. Lieut Beacham, a Navy paymaster, plans to depart Monday from Newport News with Mrs Beacham for a two year stay in China.
Textile operatives in New Hampshire reported a victory as 500 of 25,000 workers returned to mills in Manchester Nashua Dover and Somersworth on reopening day. Several centers did not restart and arrests occurred for picketing and jeering. Strike leaders planned to seek a US Senate investigation into the dispute.
Democratic Club rolls are now open for registration. Roll No 1 is at the Clerk of Court J L Perrin office and Roll No 2 at the County Treasurer R B Cheatham office. Voters must enroll by July 30 for the August 29 primary.
Joseph W. Tolbert was nominated by President Harding to the United States Senate for the Western district of South Carolina. The June announcement places Tolbert in line for the federal judgeship amid wartime cabinet shifts and regional political realignments.
Detroit June 6 Henry Ford can begin development of the Muscle Shoals water power and nitrate plants within hours if Congress accepts his offer to take over and operate the project. He envisions creating an industrial center around Muscle Shoals and says the enterprise could pay for itself before lease expires. W B Mayo, chief Ford engineer, is back in Detroit and Ford is not personally represented in Washington now. No further negotiations planned as his reply to the House Military Committee is treated as final.
A meeting is set in Greenwood at 4 PM in the Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce office to discuss forming county based baseball teams in Abbeville Greenwood Anderson and Laurens. Delegates from each city will attend as plans remain tentative with emphasis on players residing in their own counties.
An increase of 25 cents a barrel in Pennsylvania crude oil was announced as the market opened. Other grades rose 25 cents except Corning which held at 1.90. New prices show Pennsylvania crude 3.50, Cabell 2.36, Somerset 2.15, Somerset light 2.40, Ragland 1.26.
E F Arnold attended a Ford dealers meeting in Columbia starting Monday and will return home this evening. He may inform Abbeville residents whether Henry Ford will run for President.
Abbeville boys Andrew Hill Maxcy Johnson Sam Williams and Richard Swettenburg completed their year at Clemson and return home for a rest before starting their post school careers.
Columbia June 6 med conference committee of the house and senate agreed on a federal aid appropriation of 50 million dollars for 1923. South Carolina to receive about 700000 dollars with funds available July 1. 1924 and 1925 allocations rise to 65 and 75 million respectively. state matching changes may limit SC participation in 1925.

Cheatham returned Tuesday night from Clemson College and plans to leave Abbeville June 16 for the reserve officers training camp at Anniston Alabama, staying until July 27. Richard A Ballinger secretary of the interior under Taft died at his Seattle home tonight after a long public career. He served as a key cabinet official and influential figure in early 20th century politics.
Nineteen arrests were made in Manchester during a disturbance tied to the February 13 textile strike. Police clashed with gathered strikers outside the Amoskeag mill complex, with five arrests near the police station and fourteen near the mill area as orders to disperse were ignored. The strike committee signaled willingness to submit wage questions to a state board while rejecting arbitration on working hours.
Court adjourned after disposing of cases including Gid Massey found not guilty of murder and several defendants charged with or plead guilty to prohibition violations. John J. L.
