Washington notes say a clerical error in the agricultural bill caused confusion over the Comer amendment. Senator Smith moved to repeal the amendment, sending a joint resolution to the president to avoid delaying cotton trading and preserve the ten grade plan. The New York Cotton Exchange remains closed pending contract legality and by law changes.
Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Morse and young Emily Morse are guests of Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton. They visit with Dr. J. Ross Lynn, the president, as Morse attends to duties related to the institution and the family ensures proper conduct and dignity of the trusteeship.
Mrs Mamie Cox Wharton longtime Union high school Latin teacher returns to Abbeville for the summer. She is praised as one of the state’s most thorough Latin instructors and has earned the affection of her pupils and the esteem of Union residents.
Washington reports the house passed by 233 to 58 a bill permitting farmers to form combinations for collective marketing of their products despite anti trust laws. The plan, drafted by Volstead, allows groups to bargain for fair prices under limits and assigns enforcement to the secretary of agriculture.
The High School senior class presents A Good Man is Hard to Find at the Opera House Friday night. Cast includes Dorothy Wosmansky Pauline Swetenburg Evelyn Swetenburg Marjorie Nickles Kathleen Perry Miss Moffatt Sophie Reames Mary Ann Bristow Clyde Randall Catherine Faulkner Henry Randall LeRoy Cox with a chorus of fifty young children trained by Miss Birton and Ada Faulkner performing Spanish dances. Admission 25 cents for children and 60 cents for town residents.
Judge Frank B. Gary and Hon. Moore Mars served as judges at the Monday night joint debate of the two Literary societies in Due West. The topic was whether America should have compulsory military training and the Philaneathean Society won the decision, taking the Darlington Cup.
Dr. Lyon and Mrs. John Lyon of Greenwood traveled to Baltimore Monday for a course of treatment at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Friends report he has been in ill health for some time and hope for a complete restoration of health upon his return.
Governor Robert A. Cooper delivered the anniversary address at Erskine College graduation exercises on June 1. He urged graduates to think straight in personal, political, and religious matters and praised the current administration while criticizing Republicans. Valedictorian James Riley Hill spoke on "Success" as the ceremony’s highlight arc. Endowments and fellowships were discussed as alumni raised $1,000 for athletics, aiming for $1,500 annually with continued fundraising and expanded faculty salaries.
Miss Margaret Cox completes freshman year at Chicora College for Women with the Sylvan medal for the highest average in class. Her general average stands as the top score among more than 800 students, marking an exceptional start to her college career.
Allen Haskell returned from Winthrop last week to attend the graduation of his sister Miss Kate Haskell who has made a good record for herself and reflected credit on Abbeville.
The examinations are past the dresses finished and diplomas received. Nine young ladies and the Tone youth of this year's eleventh will be former pupils of Abbeville schools. The class started with fifty and fewer than a fifth remain to receive the diploma. All are sent forth prepared for college freshman work with a solid foundation. Exercises Friday morning will show the earnest nature of the class with a simple program: Class Song Salutatory by Miss Gwen Bristow History by Miss Victoria Howie In Memoriam by Miss Paulmus Woemanski Dealing in Personalities by Miss Sophie Reames.
The Chamber of Commerce holds an afternoon meeting with president election and nine committees. The education committee aims to secure a Class Prophecy pageant and establish a Baptist educational school in Abbeville, Edgefield, or McCormick, aligned with a statewide drive. The Membership Committee plans to report around two hundred members.
Washington June 1 W J Bryan before the senate labor committee urged a permanent tribunal to investigate and adjust labor controversies as a nonbinding alternative to a federal industrial court. He argued investigation and public opinion would enforce outcomes, citing peace treaty principles and arbitration limits.
The special committee of the State Democratic Executive Committee met in Columbia this week and arranged itineraries for campaign parties. The State Campaign opens in Columbia on June 22, with Senate and Congress meetings in Sumter the same date. State office candidates speak in Abbeville on August 28, while Senate and Congress speakers occur on July 13.
Dr. J. W. Thomson visited town Tuesday and received the degree of Doctor of Laws from Erskine College in Due West. He is noted as a leading educator in the state and for improving the graded school system.
Riley Hill son of John L Hill was honored at DueFest Tuesday for his achievement. Parents Mr and Mrs Hill and Mr D Hill attended the exercises at Erskine, marking a proud moment for the Hill family and hinting at a bright future.
Spartanburg June 1 announcement from Inman Mills directors states a stock dividend of 400 percent with 300 percent in common stock and 100 percent in preferred stock. A stockholders meeting is set to ratify. This is the largest stock dividend yet declared by a southern cotton mill given the mill’s current capitalization of $350,000.
Major and Mrs. J. D. Fulp visit Clinton for a P. C. alumni reunion. Several hundred former Blue Stocking graduates attend a sumptuous banquet hosted by Clinton residents. Major Fulp responds to the toast titled P. C. Reminiscences.
Gottlob Neuffer formerly with the Abbeville post office will ride on route 4 this summer. He will travel in a small motor vehicle and stir up dust along the countryside as part of his new postal duties.
Renwick Bradley, longtime delivery boy at McMurray's, has been promoted with the vacation season and now serves drinks to the public. He is praised for energy and ability and has many friends wishing him success in his new role.
Capt. J. L. Perrin attended the Erskine College closing exercises at Due West on Tuesday. A graduate of Erskine, he jokes about when he finished his studies as he reunites with old friends.
The U S Supreme Court unanimously held that federal constitutional amendments cannot be submitted to popular vote for state ratification where state referendums exist. The ruling struck down Ohio's referendum provisions and upheld only national authority, confirming Ohio has ratified both prohibition and woman suffrage amendments.
John G. Walker died at home after a weary illness and was buried in Sharon. Rev Pred Harris led services. A Confederate veteran from the 1st South Carolina Cavalry, Hampton's Brigade, he lived in Abbeville County and was viewed as a worthy citizen. Survived by daughters Mrs. John Riley and Mrs. W C Graves and son Olin Walker. He was about 78. His will had been dead for years.
