Marion Ohio townsfolk flood the Harding home as Warren G Harding accepts the party’s presidential nomination. A morning flagpole raising and marching delegations underscore a day of high enthusiasm with bands, banners, and a buoyant campaign mood.
The first reports from the committees show good success as they canvass for the American Cotton organization. Farmers and business men are ready to join, paying membership fees. Abbeville will gain a Cash Bargain Store opening September 1 in the Cox building at Washington and North Main, replacing J. M. Anderson Co. Charter papers filed. stock to total 15000 dollars. Corporators are J. L. Anderson, his mother Mrs. Ray Anderson, and J. B. Philson. Anderson to be general manager, Philson assistant. Store to focus on women's and children's apparel and dry goods. J. M. Anderson Co. will move to Greenwood. Bell of Lowndesville joined in local activity.
Abbeville County braces for a busy election with four candidates for supervisor and multiple bidders for clerk of court and house seats. Incumbents seek reelection while new challengers push their campaigns ahead of the August 31 first primary. Campaign stops are slated across Calhoun Falls Lowndesville Antreville Due West Donalds and Abbeville with enrollment deadlines near July 27.
The former pastor of the local Methodist church, Dr. J. L. Daniel, visited the Newberry congregation yesterday. He spoke of his continued ties to his old charge while praising current parishioners and sharing memories of his four years here. He noted the cigar makers had yet to outdo a Cinco de Daniel and joked about meals during the visit.
The County Sunday School convention meets at Shiloah Methodist church in double sessions on August 8. Sunday School workers from all county churches are to attend. A helpful program is planned for each session with several prominent local speakers.
Dr Edgar G Gammon, minister of Hampden Sydney Va, arrives in the city after a unanimous call from the Presbyterian church. He will lead 8:30 pm Friday service and Sunday communion. Hepreaches the annual sermon Sunday evening to the Abbeville chapter of the American Bible Society. No decision on accepting the call yet. an announcement is expected next week. Dr Gammon will stay with Dr and Mrs S G Thomson during his visit.
Mrs A M Hill Jr departs Monterey today for Erhardt after visiting her old home. Miss Bays Dannelly, who accompanied her to Erhardt, returns with Mrs Hill.
Frank B. Jones has purchased and is remodeling the Tusten house on Magazine Street and plans to move his family in soon. A new porch adds an attractive feature during the hot days.
Grand Council adjoints and four of five chief transportation unions held separate meetings after adjourning. Sentiment favored sending the award to rank and file with protests noted. Engineers, firemen, trainmen and switchmen agreed to report acceptance under protest and reserve claims for future negotiation.
The County Memorial Hospital seeks six or seven bright young women from Abbeville County to train as nurses as capacity nears full. Currently five registered nurses and two probationers are overworked, with several graduates taking short-term positions. Applications should contact Miss Blanche Reep, superintendent, promptly to secure a training place and可能 arrange education to meet graduation standards.
Bozeman Montana July 22 William J Bryan tonight reiterated his refusal to accept the Prohibition party nomination for president. He had been informed of the nomination at Lincoln Nebraska while returning from a fishing trip read the telegram at Norris and telegraphed a reply declining. He cited reasons including not severing ties with the Democratic party and his duty to focus on other reforms, while noting he may vote as he believes proper this fall and will remain in the Democratic party.
Cob B Huckabee and Cali E Harper, prominent Lowndesville citizens, say a cotton mill is assured for the town. They have secured an option on the mill machinery and can deliver equipment to install once the building is ready. They seek local investor support for the project.
