The New Hopewell Presbyterian Church was dedicated after Rev. S L Morris D D delivered sermons. The offering funded the remaining debt, and Rev. John A Smith assisted in the ceremony as the congregation celebrated a debt free building and a strong community gathering.
Members of Gilgal Church in Long Cane township plan a big day this month for the 100th anniversary of the church founding. Rev. Mr. Traywick, the eldest living preacher who served as pastor, will be present to deliver an address and all former pastors are invited. William P. Greene will read a historical sketch of the church.
City registrar T. G. Perrin notes June deaths outpaced births by over 100 percent. By July 7, 10 deaths were reported: six whites and four Negroes. Four births were reported: two whites and two Negroes, with three days left to submit June reports.
County women and children attend a three day Short Course July 14–16 at Due West Woman's College. Home Demonstration agents oversee demonstrations with highlights on canning preserving quick breads table service and poultry and cooking shows led by state agents and local experts. A campus picnic and graduation exercises cap the event with demonstrations on culling poultry steam pressure cooking and making peanut and grape products.

Capital stock subscribed totals fifty thousand dollars Lipscomb from Greenville brings broad state experience promising a significant town impact.
Governor James M. Cox of Ohio secured the Democratic presidential nomination after a long floor fight at the San Francisco convention. The roll call culminated in a unanimous vote as Cox gained momentum from Palmer and McAdoo supporters, with McAdoo delegates wavering and then dropping away. President Wilson and Senator Harding sent congratulatory messages, while Cox pledged to accept and lead the party toward victory.
A Planters Bank ad statement praises the bank after less than a year in business. It notes undivided profits above twenty percent on a capital stock of 40 000 and applauds the officers for strong early performance.
Mr and Mrs Jim Clinkscales with Mrs W A Calvert depart for the International Health Sanatorium at Battle Creek Michigan. They sought treatment there last summer and report enthusiastic results from the program and its benefits.
Mr and Mrs James M Cox and Mr and Mrs Arthur Link came back by car yesterday from the mountains of North Carolina where they spent their honeymoons.
Abbeville Cotton Mill managers celebrated the Fourth of July on July 3 with a lavish barbecue at the grove on Blue Hill. The spread featured barbecued hash pork fried chicken and an array of pies custards and cakes as guests, including staff and invited locals, enjoyed a festive gathering.
A four man party including Col. Calvert and J A Gilliam sets out from North Carolina into Tennessee cattle country. They plan a long foraging trip and aim to bring back calves tied to their Ford. Rumor says Gilliam acts as foraging officer while the others provide cover.
Cameron Morrison, a leading member of the bar of Charlotte, has been elected governor of North Carolina by a substantial majority over Lieutenant Governor Max O Gardner. The campaign, led by Ward the new agent, has been vigorous but conducted on a high plane. Morrison moves into the Douglas house on South Main Street.
Franklin D Roosevelt of New York was nominated by the Democratic National Convention at 3:15 p.m. as running mate. Several others withdrew in his favor, including Gen. Tyson of Tennessee. Ed Moore and Charles Murphy had arranged support, and Roosevelt left in a taxicab after the nomination, delivering a brief statement. The convention adjourned at 3:28 p.m.
The County Democratic Executive Committee met in the Court House to arrange county campaign plans. Dues by position were set, pledges must be filed by August 17, and campaign events listed include Calhoun Falls Lowndesville Antreville Due West Donals Abbeville with dates August 18 19 20 25 26 28. Wm P Greene resigned as County Chairman. J Howard Moore elected successor.
Mrs. J. F. Edmunds returned from Augusta after the sudden death of her father Mr. John Brunson aged eighty six. She had attended her niece’s wedding there and was called back for the funeral, mourning a husband and daughter who shared the loss.
