Washington reports the Knickerbocker theater collapse raises 107 dead and 134 injured as rescue work ends and streets remain hard to navigate after heavy snow. Separately Congress debates Leviathan repairs funding and navy yard estimates amid shipping board controls and publicity spending limits.
Washington January 29 The Interstate Commerce Commission orders railroads earning more than six percent on transportation property from September 1 1920 to January 1 1921 to turn half of the excess over six percent into a government fund. The act fixes rates through March 1 1922 to yield at least five and a half percent while allowing recovery of half the amount earned above six percent.
Trustees warn funds will not cover a full eight month term and a borrowing plan may be needed to maintain operations. The district faces a deficit even with prompt tax payments and substantial past debt. Officials hope to extend eight months to avoid losing state aid money. patrons of the high school may contribute funds to sustain the department.
In police court O Harrison A Prather and P Richie, all colored, were fined five dollars or ten days each for gaming. George Crawford, a negro man, led a disturbance Saturday when police fired in the air to stop him after arrest for carrying a concealed weapon. He had a .38 caliber pistol at his belt and fled. after officers fired several times he was recaptured this morning and fined fifty dollars or thirty days.
A historic storm blanketed the middle Atlantic region with record snowfall, centering in Washington where depths neared three feet. Virginia Maryland Delaware and the District of Columbia faced widespread disruption as transportation and government activities halted and social life paused.
Deputy sheriffs and a special agent seized a 35 gallon still at daybreak on J A Gilliam land by Little River Turkey Hill. Three men were captured two whites one white man escaped. Pinchot opposed expanding land openings until conditions improve with a federal land policy commission adopted.
Friends of Mr and Mrs 8 G Thomson Jr reveal their son Good Lad fully recovered from an illness after a daring river swim. He crossed the river but found the opposing officers too strong and returned to safety aboard the boat with the crew.
