Youthful debaters from two high school societies faced off Monday evening December 22 in a spirited contest before a full house of friends. The query on railroad government administration was well argued, with judges noting creditable efforts and neither side having reason to doubt its selections.
Secretary Daniels urged Congress to pass a joint resolution raising pay for Navy personnel by thirty percent for apprentices and others to prevent further erosion of skilled ranks. He warned total enlistments near 102,000, mostly under nineteen, leaving an effective force around 45,000 and risking inability to fleet deployments and winter maneuvers.
Indianapolis dispatch reports President Howat of the United Mine Workers in jail awaiting a contempt hearing for alleged violations of a federal court injunction against coal miners strikes. Judge Anderson denied the initial bond form and scheduled further proceedings as evidence was reviewed.
Miss Edna Bradley and Miss Ruth Howle of Abbeville depart with Brenau College for Des Moines Iowa to join the Students Volunteer Convention. The trip marks a notable honor as two Abbeville daughters are chosen to represent their college at the event.
There will be no preaching at the Methodist church Sunday as the pastor is out of town. He will return Tuesday. A prayer service is scheduled for Wednesday at 8:30 led by Rev. C. B. Peele, the pastor.
The American tank steamer John J Rockefeller ran aground at the shore end of the jetty at Tampico as a high sea raged. Communication with the tanker is expected to be impossible until sea conditions moderate. Artuy is ready to proceed when weather permits.
The Interstate Commerce Commission released findings revising freight rates among Memphis St Louis Arkansas and Oklahoma. The order reaffirms Shreveport rate principles against discrimination and sets a maximum distance based class rate scale for up to 350 miles across Arkansas Oklahoma and southern Missouri, deeming several existing Memphis and Missouri Pacific Railroad and Cotton Belt charges unreasonable or prejudicial.
Washington dispatch reports President Wilson will eat turkey Christmas Day despite illness. Mrs. Wilson will deliver gifts from the White House for Christmas morning. The turkey for White House staff will also be served in the president's room. Rear Admiral Grayson said the meal is allowed. J. C. Coleman family has moved to DeWitt Hall on Blue Hill.
Washington reports 630000 railway shopmen and union leaders plan wage demands this week to force government action before lines return to private ownership after January 1. Leaders warn of a large unauthorized strike if costs and living wages do not fall, amid anti strike provisions in Cummins and Esch bills and a pending industrial commission report.
Washington on December 24 reports the coal strike settlement terms between operators and Attorney General Palmer likely will extend beyond Christmas. Palmer's vow not to break faith prompts discussion of government pressure to push President Wilson’s proposed settlement, while operators critique the Garfield plan and await a Cleveland meeting that was canceled.
Washington dispatch says the Bituminous Coal Operators association asserts it seeks a full inquiry into the coal industry and calls a general meeting of mine owners from Pennsylvania to Washington to discuss the settlement and to present the operators case with necessary statistics. A Terre Haute spokesman says operators will abide by the arbitration plan though they seek more consultation.
