Death Toll Among Young Adults Surges in 1918 South Carolina

A study by Dr. James A. Hayne shows 1918 ten month figures for ages 20 to 30 in South Carolina with 1,141 white males and 1,097 black males, plus 481 white females and 1,209 black females dying. Influenza and pneumonia contributed to the high death toll amid the vigorous years. The record covers whites and blacks, with births and total deaths noted for 1917 and the nine months to September 30, 1919.

Death of Mrs Penney at Anderson Hospital

Mrs Alms Spearman Penney died after a brief illness at Anderson Hospital on Saturday December 21 1918. She was the wife of the late William Penney of Abbeville married in 1903 and widowed in 1904. A former resident of Anderson she practiced nursing and had many friends. Burial took place in Anderson on Monday. Dr Jack Pressly has been discharged from service and returned to Hone ready for business at the old stand. He said nothing could keep him from duty even to having his legs dressed in tea-bag puttees.
