An unsuccessful attempt was made today to assassinate the Premier while he was driving to the ministry. His assailant, a Parananarra student, was arrested in Cairo.
The Rev H Waddell Pratt resigned as Abbeville Presbyterian pastor and was named field secretary of Columbia Theological Seminary to raise a 60000 endowment for a chair in church history. He will begin January 1 and tour Georgia to solicit funds and speak in churches with the seminary planning to honor founder J Golding.
G T Tate was seriously injured Monday morning around 10 30 oclock on Maple street when a Ford runabout driven by Sam McGuen lost control and went under a porch pinning Tate between the porch and the car seat. Both men connected with Kerr Furniture Co had delivered goods to W T Norrells home and were returning home when the vehicle lurched forward. Tate remained conscious briefly, suffered broken ribs and possible sternum fracture with internal injuries feared, McCuen uninjured. Doctors attended, Tate later moved to his home for further care.
Washington December 12 The McNary bill extending government sugar control for one year was approved by the Senate and sent to the House. It would keep the sugar equalization board active through 1920 unless enacted by January 1, ending all government control. The measure faces House action under a special rule next week. The Mott Hellar amendment abolishing the zone system was adopted allowing free sale of all sugar nationwide.
Chicago reports show coal production rising across fields with most areas optimistic for normal output by early next week. Some workers in Montana Washington Wyoming oppose terms of President Wilson’s plan while Pittsburg and West Virginia see ongoing adjustments and coal retail flexibility for nine hour Saturday stores near the holidays.
The Supreme Court ruled wartime prohibition constitutional in a unanimous decision. The ruling ends hopes for a December wet spell and leaves untouched cases on the Volstead Act and enforcement provisions of the prohibition amendment.
Berlin December 14. The subcommittee probing peace opportunities will publish the full record of communications with the Washington embassy and the official documents related to the central powers peace offers.
A Southern passenger train crashed into a Chevrolet near Hodges on Saturday afternoon. W. B. Nickles, the car’s driver, escaped injury after being thrown from the vehicle as the engine hit and distorted the car beyond recognition. Nickles, who lives near Hodges, was en route to meet the train and did not see it approaching.
The Friday football contest between Abbeville High and Greenwood High was canceled by Greenwood officials. No reschedule date announced.
New clothing shop Anderton and Corley announces its opening on January 1. Partners J M Anderson and C E Corley will relocate from the Kell er and Bros building after the sale forces the move. L W Ketter and Bros will shift to the A M Smith building now housing the American Woolen Mills.
Weather Bureau reports cold wave warnings for North and Central Florida and storm warnings along the Atlantic coast from Jacksonville to Boston. A forty eight hour cold spell is seen across the eastern half of the nation except southern Florida, with freezing temperatures already in the Gulf States as the Atlantic disturbance moves offshore.
Two literary societies of the high school plan a public debate next Monday night December 22 on whether the government should own run and control the nation’s railroads. Roy Cox and Miss Adam Faulkner lead opposing teams with Mary Greene opposing Gilly Long.
The December P T A meeting will be held this Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 in the High School building. Report on playground fund subscriptions expected, with nonmembers urged to send contributions. Chorus, recitations, and duets by intermediate pupils will be part of the Christmas program.
Maj Tom Davis dis charged from Canin Pike arrives in Abbeville Saturday night to join Mrs Davis and enjoy the holidays. He finds himself at home among local military dignitaries and plans a turkey dinner chat with them while the hospital delay hinders him from practicing as a doctor during this visit.
The County Savings Bank opened its doors Monday inviting the people of Abbeville County to visit. The banking rooms are modern and finished in the handsomest manner with officers including Dr W G A Neuffer as president Albert Henry as vice president E Cox as cashier and P B Bell as assistant cashier.
Mrs J W Nichols Botter who had been ill for some time at the home of her daughter Mrs Paul Link is greatly improved indicating a favorable turn in her condition.
Washington reports relaxation of bituminous coal use rules continuing as investigations into the settlement proceed. Attorney General Palmer and others may be summoned to explain Garfield plans while W U M A leader predicts 95 percent of miners return by Monday night as regional rail directors lift more restrictions and the work week begins with a nearer normal industrial situation.
Washington reports Christmas 1919 will be the most peaceful Yule since 1913 as warfronts fade. Bolshevik fronts show little action though Bolshevik plots to bomb US towns were believed broken up. Russia fronts under Yudenitch Denekin and Kolchak are largely inactive. Mr and Mrs D T Smith Townsend Jr visit from Pelzer and note rough Due West roads.
