Nickless tenure guides Abbeville county bridge revival
Mr. G N Nickles was elected supervisor in 1900 and, taking charge December 19, led a $20,000 county debt into a period of major road and bridge rebuilds. A 1901 flood and August freshet destroyed many spans, but under Nickles the county rebuilt 18 to 26 bridges, upgraded crossings, graveled roads, and saved funds by diligent claim investigations. The work, including Dendys and Cannons bridges, and a new county farm, marked one of the state’s most modern programs.
