Coal Miners Win Wage Restorations Across Regions
The Pittsburgh scale committee ordered 1920 22 wage state posting at all member mines but rejected the United Mines Workers demand to enforce the check off system. About 45 000 union miners are affected while 40 000 bituminous workers in Westmoreland and Fayette counties received an offer of the industrys highest ever wage increase. Union locals with 10 000 miners walked away from an average rise of about 2.50 dollars a day until union recognition is granted. Operators prepared for a rush of returning mines, extra deputies on hand to deter disorder.

Washington August 23 Alterna tive plans for the maintenance of prices for coal and its line have organized an association known as the South Carolina Home Producers' Association. Its object is to utilize the products in the State that would otherwise go to waste by converting them into standard marketable goods. 200000 containers of inspected material will be ready for sale this fall. Ten products are prepared for market including Soup Mixture Dixie Burgoo Blackberry Jam Plum Jelly and Fig Preserves. An all day demonstration is planned at Plant ers Bank with Mrs Frances Y. Kline and Mrs Alma C. Gibbons to announce date.

Burn Sheriff's Car in Greenwood Distillery Raid
Greenwood August 24 officers raided a county liquor distillery. Friends of the distillers allegedly set fire to the sheriff's automobile, heavily damaged before flames were put out. Two men Joe Klugh and James Edwards were arrested. Two looper stills of 45 and 50 gallons, seven gallons of liquor, and 2000 to 4000 gallons of mash were seized. The stills were two and a half miles from the Abbeville county line west of Greenwood. four men were at the site, two escaped.

Beech Tree 150 Years Old Near Trembling Shoals
A massive beech tree near Trembling Shoals on Little River is 4 beech trees over 100 years old. An Indian Head with a bow and arrow and a horse is carved on its side, dated 1770. The carving is well done, though mossy in places and visible to passing generations.
