In Lucerne on August 24 Great Britain and Italy demanded Russia withdraw objectionable armistice clauses before week’s end. Lloyd George and Giolitti criticized Soviet demands to arm Polish workers and urged a reply. they warned against Soviet interference in Poland. The note cited a breach of faith by the Soviet government and reaffirmed allied insistence on independent Polish sovereignty. Eight Bolshevik divisions were reportedly annihilated with over 40,000 Polish prisoners and 200 guns captured.
