Alaska Sinks Off Blunt's Reef Killing Dozens
Eureka California August 8 a San Francisco and Portland line steamer the Alaska sank after hitting Blunt's Reef 40 miles from Eureka. Forty eight aboard lost including eight crew and four passengers with Captain Harry Hobey missing. One rescue ship Anyox saved 166 survivors many injured. Life boats capsized in fog causing the main fatalities.

Triple murder suicide shocks Kentucky town
In Corbin Kentucky a man Richard McHargue killed his wife the stepdaughter and his mother in law at their home then set a fire and killed himself. Neighbors heard pistol shots around 8 pm Friday concluding the killings occurred then. Bodys found in two rooms with knife and fire damage indicated motive unclear.

At Reeves Louisiana the Gulf Coast Line freight train No 32 plunged from a high trestle called Clear Creek Bridge. The engine crossed safely but sixty cars fell into the ravine and fifteen unauthorized men were burned beyond recognition.

Senate passes anti beer bill in tense session
Washington Aug 9 The Willis Campbell anti beer bill cleared the senate by 39 to 20 and goes to conference with the house. Fire destroys Armour Fertilizer shed in Columbus Georgia
