New Orleans reports total American cotton takings for the year ended July 31 reached 14 171 000 bales, with a value around 765 700 560 dollars for the crop alone. Comparing previous seasons, 18 519 000 and 14 512 000 bales were noted, while U S and overseas demand offset a sharp year with a short crop and strong consumption.
Miss Lavinia Coleman hosts a morning card party to honor Miss Mabel Kennedy of Troy and Miss Nella Livingston of North. About sixteen young ladies attend to meet the visitors.
Interested friends are asked to note that the little baby of Mr and Mrs Jordan Ramey is quite ill at their home on South Main Street and will welcome news of a complete recovery.

Miss Hattie McMurray of Lancaster visits Abbeville to see Dr. and Mrs. C H McMurray. A Winthrop graduate, she receives a warm welcome from former classmates and is noted as an expert first grade teacher.
Judge and Mrs Frank B Gary return to their home after a month in the North Carolina mountains. They describe a pleasant trip despite ongoing rain.
Mrs. Wyatt Aiken and family are back in Abbeville after a year in Washington. Aiken is warmly welcomed by local friends who regard her as a general favorite in town.
An officer of the National Guard at Camp Lore said a tent held 65,000 dollars in real money and Ninety men were paid off in minutes on joy day at the camp.
Senator Tillman presses South Carolina lawmakers to remain in Washington to push the naval appropriations bill approving a 1,085,000 dollar dry dock extension and a foundry at Charleston Navy Yard. At a bridge club meeting last Thursday Miss Esther Graydon hosted guests Miss Margaret Burton Newberry Miss Lucy Thomson Atlanta Miss Sarah Perrin and Miss Lavinia Coleman.
A protracted meeting will be held at Warrenton beginning next Sunday August 18 led by Rev. James L. Martin.
Mrs. Robert Y. Simmons died at midday Saturday August 8 1916 after months of illness. Born October 26 1882 in Fort Pickens she married Robert Y. Simmons December 24 1903 and lived in this city. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church and interment was at Long Cane cemetery. Survived by husband sisters Mrs Carl Womansky Mrs Lewis Sprouse Miss Della Wilson and brother E L Wilson.
H Bruce Fant, said to be the youngest traveling salesman in Georgia, has been on the road for Athens Hide Company for weeks. The 12 year old boy has visited Franklin NC, McCormick SC, Cornelia GA, and other Georgia towns, returning from a trip and preparing to depart again.
The Abbeville Calhoun and Lowndesville districts list names named by Graydon as chairman and Horton as secretary. The article names election managers for multiple locales including Abbeville, Caldwell, Lebanon and Mountain View with numerous individuals cited.
The First Palmetto Regiment trained in Columbia and advanced toward the border in three sections. The first battalion left at 9 a.m. and reached Greenville at 3 p.m., passing Spartanburg and Greenville where they paraded to Washington Street. Commanded by Captain Gossett, the unit included the Machine Gun Company with soldiers Gottlob A. Neuffer Jr. and others. The troops sent greetings to Abbeville via a Press and Banner representative.
Since the European War began the name of Lord Kitchener has dominated public attention. In America many mourn his loss as England’s greatest soldier. Judge Benet of Abbeville possesses two cordial letters from Kitchener thanking him for copies of his war ballads used in English recruiting stations and military bands. Benet also published an Easter hymn welcomed by music lovers with words and music appearing in The Churchman.
In a powerful morning attack Germans retook the Thiaumont works northeast of Verdun amid heavy fighting around the redoubt. Overnight, a five-prong bombardment struck French positions from Fleury to Thiaumont with Fleury attacks repulsed and a joint effort near Guillamont reaching the village outskirts. A new high fragmentation shell reportedly used powdered glass, but was abandoned as fragments were too minute.
Dr Power and Mrs Power arrived in Abbeville and are at home to their friends with Mr and Mrs J L McMillan. Power is well known and Mrs Power is endearing herself to many locals as the couple settles in.
Mr and Mrs G Parthemos welcome a fine baby girl born last week making the second Greek baby in Abbeville. The mother and child are healthy and the family receives warm congratulations from many friends for the newborn and the hopeful future.
The book club met last Wednesday with fifteen members present. Mrs Horton presided in Mrs Miller’s absence and led a discussion on current topics. Refreshments followed the meeting, enriching the social gathering.
Abbeville avoided snow last week but the white on the ground came from lime spread at the request of the city board of health. Wet weather could raise illness unless residents maintain cleanliness and proper sanitation.

Dr John G Clinkscales stayed briefly in Abbeville on Tuesday en route to Calhoun Falls where he spoke in public that night. He has published a book titled On The Old Plantation drawing interest from friends and admirers in Abbeville County where he was born and raised.

Turks face heavy casualties near the Suez Canal as Austrians clash with Italians around Gorizia and the Isonzo.
The Bridge Club will meet Friday afternoon at five o'clock at the home of Mrs. W. P. Greene for a session.
Roger Williams, a farmer, toured the city on Saturday to sell produce raised on his farm rather than purchase goods. His purpose was described as farm derived commerce rather than urban buying.
Miss Ivy Calhoun is at home from Little Ark where she has spent the season doing library work. Friends express delight at her return.
Miss Lucy Zachary arrives in the city from Sylva North Carolina where she spent her vacation with her family. Friends greet her upon their return and welcome her back.
Col A M Stone left Abbeville Sunday night to join McKee Motor Sales Company in Columbia. He served Abbeville five years and was well liked. Mrs Stone will move to Columbia once suitable apartments are found. She is noted for church work and will be missed by all.
