Reports indicate no box outside Abbeville city favored the bonds while results from Due West Donalds Antreville and Lowndesville show opposition. James Magill Returns Home From Philippine Islands

James Magill arrives in Abbeville from the Philippines after three years away. He served in a government post and was mostly stationed in Luzon. The trip took six weeks, landing at Vancouver on July 28. He plans to enter a second Training Camp at Fort Oglethorpe or return to the Philippines soon.

Father Joseph Budd died Saturday in Charleston. For many years he supplied the Catholic church here and was well known in Abbeville. His death was received with regret by many locals who remembered his service.

Examinations Begin for Abbeville County Registrants

The Abbeville county examination of registered men started in Clerk J L Perrins office this morning with 60 summonses for physical exams. The first call targets 172 registrants, with 50 to appear daily until quota is met. About 75 percent may claim exemptions, 40 percent for physical disability, and around 60 percent for dependents or industrial work. Industrial exemptions will be decided by the district board without the focal board recommendation.

French Break in German Lines in Champagne District

Paris reports French troops last night broke into German lines in three places in the Champagne district inflicting heavy losses on the Teutons and taking prisoners. The German attack between Avocourt Wood and Hill 304 was repelled with heavy German losses as the war office announced.

Abbeville Women Raise $500 for Red Cross Carnival

Abbeville community event by the Womans National League for Service drew large crowds last Thursday. Parades and booths from England Ireland Scotland France Russia Romania and various groups featured entertainment and food stalls to raise funds for war relief. The event, supervised by Mrs H Waddell Pratt, raised five hundred twenty five dollars for the Red Cross.

Burriss Acquitted Over Age Status in Federal Case

John Burriss of Calhoun Falls was acquitted at a preliminary federal hearing after it was shown he was not 21 on June 5 but had turned 21 on July 2. He had been charged with failure to register and released on bond. Other slackers in the county face federal investigation.

Red Cross reorganizes into thirteen divisions for work

Washington reports the American Red Cross will split into thirteen divisions led by division directors with full authority. States named for divisions include Massachusetts New York Ohio Iowa Texas and California. Headquarters and depots will shift to divisional cities enabling bulk shipments and faster operations for literature funds and supplies.

Southern Railway Spends Big in the South in June 1917

Washington August 4 The Southern Railway Company paid out 7 361 282 in June 1917 with 79.48 percent or 5 850 537 of that total to individuals and industries in the South. The company spent 1 641 882 99 on road and structure improvements. Gross revenue for June 1917 was 7 143 682, up 23.92 percent from 1916, while operating expenses rose about 23.10 percent to 6 093 202.
