Washington August 3 Leaders begin revising the program as high living costs and railroad wages loom large. Senate will weigh German French and Colombian treaties while the House tackles high cost living issues and wage questions. Debate on the Colombian treaty is expected to run several days in open session.
Monday was Sales Day at the Court House with two land tracts sold. S. A. Graves, trading as the Acker Building and Repair Co., bought a small Greenwood Road plot for 550 dollars. The Jason Simpson land of 112 acres near Little Mountain sold by the Probate Court to Dr. S. G. Thompson for 810 dollars.
Sheriff Burts, U S Deputy Marshal Bruce, Deputy Sheriff Cann and Attorney R H Moore will leave this week for Greenville to attend the United States District Court in session there.
Sheriff Burts and Deputy Marshal Bruce captured a violent black woman described as crazy after she attacked a man while driving a handsome Oakland car two miles west of town. She was taken to the county jail pending a lunacy commission decision.
Washington August 3 an opinion by Elihu Root and William D Guthrie for the United States Brewers association declares the war time prohibition bill unconstitutional until the 18th amendment takes effect. It argues Congress has no power to prohibit beer manufacture or sale before January 20 1920 and says there is no need to conserve the food supply.
A Redpath Lyceum series of five numbers featuring music lectures and plays has been secured for Abbeville this fall. Proceeds go to Abbeville County Memorial Hospital funded by 89 men at ten dollars each totaling 890 dollars. The Opera House or Court House will host the events.
Messrs. W. D. Wilson W. H. White Eugene Johnson and Lewis Perrin left Monday afternoon for the North. They will buy the best the market affords and also take in the big sights.
Mrs J M Thorn and her family of several children depart Abbeville Friday after a lengthy visit with Mrs W D Barksdale. The party will visit Anderson and Iya before reaching Lexington Kentucky. Old friends welcomed her return and noted her sturdy sons and pretty young daughter.
Mrs. Norborn Bacot and four children come from Norfolk to visit Mrs. Rachael Minshall in Abbeville. Mrs. Bacot previously visited Abbeville years ago and old friends will be glad to see her again.
Mr M T Coleman Robert Coleman Jim Coleman and Frank Hodges left Monday for the mountains of North Carolina for a fishing trip. Jim Coleman will carry the bait and Frank Hodges will lead in tallying their catch.
The annual picnic at Cold Springs will be held Friday August 15 with an interesting program at 2. The public is invited to attend with baskets.
Rev Henry Pressly visiting Abbeville preached at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church on Sabbath. His sermons are always excellent and the congregation listened with pleasure.
In a dated letter from Paris June 25 1919 Captain Hemphill writes to his sister Polly about life in the French capital on the night of the armistice signing. He notes language learning, social events at the French Home Society, a bet over the peace signing, and observations on Parisians and American soldiers including a Boston lieutenant and a humorous contrast with Atlanta. The letter ends with a vivid anecdote of two encounters near the Champs Elysees and Gare St Lazare, hinting at broader social impressions.
In a Sunday afternoon incident at Flat Church near Martin's Mill Ralph Chiles was shot in the stomach by Dave Alexander and his brother Bob used a plank. The Alexanders then went to a Black church at Antreville for Sunday School where they were arrested. Coroner Cox held the inquest Monday.
Miss Saidee Magill, longtime history teacher at the city high school, has notified the board she cannot teach next year due to continued illness. Although she recovered earlier, a physician now advises against teaching this coming year, and her resignation is seen as a loss to the school because she is an experienced and capable educator.
In August, no services were held at the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church. On Sunday night the congregation and the preacher conducted a heatwave relief meeting to address the conditions and offer respite this season.
Washington Aug 1 The advisory board of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers urged President Wilson to consider government steps to reduce the cost of life while engineers seek another wage increase. The board blamed profiteering and urged action to lower expenses, noting widespread wage-earner unrest. Wilson promised serious consideration after the hour-long conference and discussed the matter with Director General Hines.
Rail workers at Seaboard Shops threaten a walkout urging a nationwide strike. Chicago reports indicate machinists and helpers may join by Tuesday as unions push coordinated action. Hawver, president of the Chicago district council, says the strike is spreading and could involve major railroad crafts nationwide. Cleveland boards back a strike by 26 000 unskilled workers tomorrow. Maintenance of Way Men also prepared to strike.
Mount Clemens Mich July 26 An expert on theology testified in the Henry Ford Chicago Tribune libel suit as a counter to Professor Reeves of the University of Michigan. Bishop Charles D Williams of Detroit head of the Eastern Michigan diocese of the Protestant Episcopal Church said Jesus’ use of half truths was a rhetorical device. He argued Ford’s views on disarmament were not unique to anarchists but shared by pacifists and others. He noted the remark about abolishing the American armed forces was strong language used to persuade, not a declaration of policy.
