Fatal Accident on Haskell Hill Claims Two Women

In Greenville street sundown crash, Janie Sturkey died and Dolly Calhoun was injured when a car driven by Lawrence Callaham struck them. Eyewitness L. T. Aldrick testified seeing the speeding auto after warning cries, with Callaham reportedly intoxicated. Dolly later recovered at home. Janie died from multiple injuries. Coroner’s jury ruled reckless driving caused the death. Callaham fled the scene and was not immediately detained.

Callaham Placed in Jail After Reckless Driving Verdict

Deputies returned to the city after an assurance from Mr Radcliffe that Callaham would be brought in. Callaham, found reckless driving, claimed he did not intend to drink and tried to stop the car but could not. He cannot recall passing Aldrick's buggy or a woman leaving the scene. Radcliffe and Chief Johnson praised his long-held reputation for honesty.

Carriers To Receive 1 134 000 000 A Year Net Return

Washington announces rate increases granted to railroads by the Interstate Commerce Commission. The new tariffs promise an annual net income of 1 184 000 000 for carriers, about 241 000 000 above the prewar standard return and 99 000 000 below the 1 283 000 000 they sought. Rates rise about 33 percent on freight, 20 percent on passenger and related services, and 50 percent for space in sleeping and parlor cars.

A noon Saturday meeting in the courthouse heard township reports on American Cotton Association drives. Lois Ervin praised for securing many new memberships, with Abbeville 69 members and 824.75 dollars, Due West 83 members 171 dollars, Antreville 72 members 190 dollars, Cedar Springs 14 members, Long Cane 28 members, others unreported. G N Nickles urged farmers to join to gain warehouse storage and better prices.

C D Brown and Rev Louis J Bristow depart for Minneapolis to attend the supreme Lodge of the Knights of Pythias. Bristow is one of three delegates from South Carolina with Judge M L Smith and Alya M Lumpkin. Other prominent SC Pythians joining the party include Gen M L Bopham and Col O J Bond. Bristow plans a Montana trip and Yellowstone visit before returning in September.

Mrs Cornelia Cothran Cothran Dies After Yearlong Illness

Mrs Cornelia Brunson Cothran died Saturday morning after a twelve month illness. Born 1870 in Edgefield County, she lived in Abbeville since her 1892 marriage to Wade S. Cothran. She is survived by husband James S. Cothran of Greenville, daughter Margaret, brother A L Brunson, two sisters, and four uncles. Funeral Sunday at 5 pm from the late residence with Rev George M Telford officiating. interment Long Cane cemetery. Pallbearers listed.

Cotton growers plan to hold pricing conference in September

Washington reports growers aim to keep cotton prices high for the new crop with hopes around 40 cents per pound. Congressman J Thomas Heflin notes a September conference of leading grower associations to plan domestic and foreign market handling, demand, transport, and regulatory benefits from recent cotton legislation. Cotton Futures Rise After Bullish Government Report

The government condition report issued at 1:00 AM showed a bullish tilt, lifting cotton futures about 80 points immediately after release. The bureau noted Crop Condition 14.1 and acreage estimates for 1919 at 35,504,000 acres, up from 35,133,000 in the prior period.
