Red Cross Chapter Elects Officers At City Hall

A meeting of local citizens formed a permanent Red Cross Chapter with 84 members. Joel S. Morse was named chairman and Mrs. Frank B. Gary vice chairman. Otto Bristow became treasurer and Mrs. C. C. Gambrell secretary. Committees on constitution and by laws and membership named. executive committee to be appointed. Several branches have applied for membership through the Abbeville Chapter.

Grand Carnival for Soldiers Benefit in Abbeville

Abbeville hosts a Grand Carnival on the square Thursday August 2 to aid the Soldiers Benefit Service League. Admission is 25 cents for adults and 10 cents for children, with all activities, foods, and drinks for sale on site. The event promises abundant eatables and a large supper, with tables provided for diners and all urged to attend despite heat.

Mr. J. M. Gambrell resigns as bookkeeper at Abbeville Cotton Mill effective today after six years. He plans to devote time to insurance work and attends a Greenwood convention this week. Julian Roche succeeds him at the mill.

Abbeville Figures Question Levy and Bonded Debt

The Abbeville Medium promised figures showing a four and a half mill levy to repay $300,000 in bonded debt over twenty years. The piece argues the county’s taxable value is about $4.7 million, notes double entries and uncollected taxes, and calculates that a $21,150 annual payment would cover the debt under a 4.5 mill levy.
