A Tasmanian committee met in Launceston to discuss a new log of wages. An outline was drafted and will be submitted for members’ consideration. The secretary was told to contact weaving companies to amend the rate. The rural leg committee will meet at a later date.
A settlement has been reached in the Lithgow iron workers dispute after conference talks. The union secured a substantial portion of its claim, and operation details indicate restored work and continued negotiations.
Heavy price pressures aside, a retailer advertises a large corset stock bought direct from manufacturers. It lists Nautilus and Golden Wattle models in multiple sizes at reduced prices, highlighting specific sizes and sale terms to attract customers.
At a Chamber of Commerce meeting the insufficiency of telephone service was blamed on suppliers. Eight businessmen reportedly offered chocolate boxes to gain attention, while a well known citizen denied medical attention after a missed call. A similar meeting discussed improving service and urged interviews with the Postmaster General.
The Tasmanian branch of the Australian Workers' Union concluded its annual delegate meeting. Nominations were received for all sections with delegates named for ALP positions. J Ferguson of Cressy and J Wokohen of Quernstma among nominees for vice presidents. Moser Cunningham Posen and Fergwon appointed delegates to ALP. M. Damielly from Quenmetemny elected president in continuing mining department roles. Mr McChen a MUJIC. appointed president for the coming term.
In the early hours at Norh Brodoy or Astoria Flats, a porter faced gunfire from crouching men. A revolver discharged, knocking the pistol from the porter’s hand. an explosion followed and the porter was shot through the arm. The assailants escaped.
Acting Commonwealth Treasurer Sir Joseph Cook disclosed that only about 916000 taxpayers from a pool of 4000000 aged 21 and over paid Commonwealth income tax, with thousands exempt due to deductions and many others outside the tax net. Authorities stress that substantial national wealth remains untaxed.
