The Yorkton station reports on experimental wheat testing comparing Marquis and Fife varieties. Frost, wireworms, and frost damage affected yields, with Fife showing later harvest and larger kernels. Observations cover plant growth, worm damage patterns, and grain quality versus Marquis.
Last Thursday a conference of members adherents and friends of St. Andrew's church was held. Representatives from the church societies attended and full discussion took place on morous actions connected with church workings with special reference to the winter months.
A Calder inquest opened after Alen Shulman living six miles south of Calder was named as a person of interest in an alleged murder case. The investigation proceeded with testimony from local authorities and neighbors.
The annual meeting of the Yorkton and district Red Cross Society will be held on the fourth. The turnout of the general public is invited to participate in this important work supporting cancer care.
In a British wartime tally the Royal Air Force shows 94 759 Magis with 2564 hours of flight time and 59 crashes, 36 serious. English figures list 9000 Media and 4000 hours flown with 16 hospitalised and other losses. The data imply casualties in both services are similar, with Canada noted for a global reach of about 116 260 miles.
Premier Martin spent a week in the eastern district inspecting schools where attendance was nearly perfect despite foreign-born pupils. He plans further speeches and public meetings in Yorkton School Fair and other venues with Navy League support.
The Board of Trade pushed for a local branch and in fall 1917 Success Business College began operations. Principal Earl leased most of the first floor of the Krushen Block in new avenues, with light airy rooms and up to date facilities. The college aims to turn out efficient students in minimal time, expanding quickly to serve the town and district.
The Calle state Field Day Friday featured swift contests across junior and senior girls and boys events. Winners included Maude Patrick Florence Erichsen Alice Dodger and Josephine Carpenter among many, with relay races, hurdles, sprints and jumps dominating the program.
Yorkton and District casualties include A. E. McKeeve of Wynyard and Lieut H. Johannsson MC. Herbert Dagkl who enlisted here with the 188th.
Roscoe R. Fletcher enlisted at Melville in 1916 with the 229th Battalion and later moved to the 411th Battalion. He is survived by his widow and three young brothers residing in Yorkton. Frank Galbraith, a nephew, is mentioned with a listing in the Spice boys advertising section noting five dollars for two potstors with details in the volume.
An adjourned Town Council meeting reviewed the tax levy, budget estimates, and light and water accounts. The report highlights year end balances, projected surpluses, and proposed levy changes to fund public works and debt service.
