The Somme Battle Colonist’ Royal Scots’ Gallant Charge
A Royal Scots private attached to a trench mortar battery describes the Somme assault. Rain and mud hindered early bombardment, then 7:30 am push began with intense shelling and machine-gun fire. Despite heavy casualties on the third and fourth lines, soldiers forged ahead, taking trenches with few losses at first before heavy German counterfire. Dugouts showed lavish German shelters. Edinburgh men reported advanced gear and food stores. A bombing party of subalterns and privates fought the German third line through the day, aiding an officer wounded twice, while other units captured positions and endured severe bombardment as Reds held their ground.
