Crop reports from Saskatchewan indicate seventy percent of wheat weeded with seeding far advanced in central southeastern and west central districts. Weather has been cool and wet with late frosts delaying work yet overall crops show good moisture and livestock improving. Compared to last season wheat seeding is about three weeks ahead.
Red Cross notes urge donations to the Sask branch with grateful thanks from the treasurer. Past week gifts include amounts from Mrs. Win Sharpe and Mr A A Common. A fundraiser in Wolseley town hall Friday May features solos and a wartime program to aid Red Cross. Proceeds go to the war effort.
The report lists George Philip among the wounded for Friday with a second injury after brief trench service. Other notes mention Mr. E Pow purchasing a Gray Dart car and Mr. Wm Ferguson visiting his mother in Creeiman. Memorial service for Pte. Paul Wiklund held at Liberty.
Fragmentary wartime note urges support for France and Flanders relief through YMCA efforts. Calls for donations and patriotic generosity to aid soldiers, civilians, and homefront morale as May 7 events are hinted.
Church notices list mass at St Anns at 10 and 3 and 2 oclock pm Zion Evangelic church services and Sunday school led by W Mohring. Moffat Church reports pastor Moffat with services at 1 and 7 30 with Sab Bat class at 2. First Presbyterian Morgan leads 1 am and 7 30 pm worship. Next Sabbath May 3 exchange of ministers and choirs between Wolseley and Grenfell with Rev Hugh Nixon leading Federated churches worship and Rev Morgan guiding Grenfell service. Evening service to begin at 7 30 from next Sabbath.
The Chester Rural Council met in the secretary office on Thursday in April. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted. A circular was prepared to ask the department of highways for a surveyor for road dives. Gopher bounty was agreed at five cents per gopher for detections up to Gopher Day. A school liaison plan and a road petition along the blind line were discussed. The meeting approved accounts and adjourned.
Mrs Northrop and her son Gren visited Mr Spencer. The Ladies Auxiliary of England hosted a ten cent tea, raising thirty five dollars. A. G. Montecrieff and James McKinley visited Regina last week. Dr and Mrs O'Brien moved to Morse Saskatchewan. Miss A Cornell returned to Brandon for the summer.
Bar ing the town records show Mr A Davidson advancing in rank and several farmers preparing to stand without cautious plans. Mr N Fox recently brought in two of the local workers while Mr P Leech bought a quarter section west of his farm. Congratulations to Hichel on the arrival of Mr and Mrs G visiting Mr Auld suggesting further social visits.
The Westfield Homemakers' Club met at J. L. Barber's home on April 2 with 25 members. Members packed 120 pairs of socks and 24 day shirts sent to Daughters of the Empire Regina, plus pillows and cases to the Red Cross Regina. Donations included $5 from Miss L B Withers, life memberships for Annie Barber $500 and Lottie Barber $35, Miss Iza Fleming $25, and a knitting fund totaling $230.
Mr. D. K. Mills left for Winnipeg after three weeks here working a four horse team. Lieut. W. H. Laidlaw and Miss Bessie Kennedy wed at Regina and plan front service, Mrs. Laidlaw joining him overseas. Readers praise ministers receiving cars, argue for practical charity over churchgoing, and note Summerhill School service at 3 30 pm Sunday.
The couple were married at the bride’s parents residence in Summerberry on April 24. Rev. E M Bishop officiated. Irene Frances Osler, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W P Osler, wed Ernest Valentine Lermcke, both of Summerberry.
