Battle of Croppy's Hill at Port Macquarie
In Port Macquarie a hundred years ago a clash between Irish rebels and red-coated soldiers culminated in the deaths of Terence O Shea and James Vaughan amid pursuit of escapees from the settlement. The 48th Regiment faced mutiny as Irishmen faced harsh discipline and cultural hostility, ending with Vaughan mortally wounded at Croppy Hill and buried beside the sea.
