The Wilkie School hosts its first local School Fair next Wednesday September 1 with a children parade of floats many banners and sports events from 10 00 am at the fairground a reception in the assembly hall and a packed day of races and exhibitions across multiple age groups and classes culminating in a social evening.
A wartime appeal urges contributions to the French Wounded Emergency Fund via Imperial or Union Bank branches Wilkie. Managers Pook and Willson plan canvassing for funds, while a delegate recounts hospital hardships in evacuated French towns and the urgent need for supplies. TD Neahitt, injured in Hardisty, is progressing at a hospital. Bishop Newnham visited Wilkie en route east.
Town Council minutes from September 1917 show Mayor Scott and councilors approving a five dollar rebate for KR J Speers on an auctioneers license, awarding coal tender advertising, authorizing repairs or replacement for a chemical engine, hotel rate and sanitation tax terms, a five dollar per month salary increase for the Town Constable, and authorized alterations to the discharge pipe and payment of accounts.
Minutes of the Rural Municipality of Buffalo No 40 meeting held September 10 1917 at the Wilkie municipal office. Attending were Reeve J Wallace Councillors Ketcheson Imrie Cotter and Stewart. Motions include adopting the August 6 minutes approving a tax sale for November 5 granting 200 to the Great War Veterans Association Saskatoon approving bills 502 to 507 and adjourning to October 1.
Minutes record the Saskatchewan Public School Trustees meeting held September 1917 with members J J Gunn A Schaab A Colwell A B Ford and J P Hermann. They discuss furniture for the Normal School session advertising needs and a committee to assess teacher accommodation. August reports show Saskatchewan Red Cross donations total 35294.60 with 3970.58 for French Red Cross and 302 cases sent east. Notes include injuries to Lucas Delainey from a horse and C Kirkland recovering from a binder injury.
A German air raid over a French town near Rheims dropped poisoned candy that killed many children who consumed it. The report lists civilian casualties and details of the attack as part of ongoing wartime tensions.
The Teachers Convention invites all interested to attend sessions next Thursday and Friday with an evening public meeting. Professor Rose of Saskatoon Normal Staff and Dr Hogg of the University of Saskatchewan will address the gathering. The program promises inspiration education and entertainment and urges a large overflow crowd at the Public School Auditorium at 8 o clock.
The town proclaims a civic holiday on Wednesday September 19 1917 from 1 to 4 PM in observance of School Fair Day. Citizens are urged to observe the holiday. Mayor A J Scott signs the notice.
