Empress of Ireland Sinks After Collision in St Lawrence

The Empress of Ireland was rammed by the Norwegian collier Storstad in the lower St Lawrence Friday morning and sank within 15 minutes. Among the drowned is actor Lawrence Irving and his wife. both bodies recovered. Storstad reached port under her own steam.

Wilkie to Drill Second Well May Solve Water Problem

Work began last week on a second Wilkie well with 50 feet drilled by afternoon. Sand for 20 feet then blue clay. officials expect large fresh water supply, projecting a strike next week at an average of 18 feet per day under continuous operation.

The Wilkie WCTU rents two rooms in Mr Laycock’s Imperial Ave East building to create Rest Rooms for women. Open from early morning to evening, shaded and cool, with toilet facilities, books, magazines, and hooks for cooling wraps. They seek donations and a $1 membership through Aug 1915 to support furnishing and operation.

Wilkie Set To Hold July 1 Celebration

A Wilkie community meeting at the Fire Hall formed a committee to organize a July 1 celebration with proceeds split between event costs and horse race purses tied to the Wilkie Agricultural Society Fair. Planned events include baseball football and foot races without trotting.

Accident injures local man near Pioneer Livery Barn

Jim McMichael of Wilkie suffered twelve stitches in one arm and multiple cuts to his head after an accident on main street at Scott last Thursday. While replacing broken tugs on a team driven by a commercial man, the man jumped out, causing the horses to bolt and wheel over McMichael. He was unconscious for hours before medical aid arrived. the team escaped unharmed after the collision with a telephone post.

Celebration at Cut Knife Draws Huge Wilkie Crowd

A large Wilkie turnout rode a special train and autos to the Cut Knife Celebration. The weather was fine and many were from Wilkie and nearby areas. Wilkie Baseball and Football teams performed well with the football team taking first prize by defeating Cut Knife. Baseball matchups featured Wilkie and Maidstone in the early game.
