The Government Board investigated a year ago and approved an arrangement with local authorities on bonded debt, but a year later the plan proved unworkable. Mr. Davidson visited Beattie to ratify the new arrangement.
Petitions in Ottawa protest potential abolition of the Royal North West Mounted Police. Officials state no plan to dissolve the force and announce a buildup to about four thousand men. The expansion aims to improve Western Canada patrols with Alberta and Saskatchewan deployments while provincial enforcement duties limit police time.
The text announces a National Service Committee formed by direction of R. B. Bennett in the Dominion House. It lists appointed members across Saskatchewan districts with Wilkie and Senlac among places, names include Carscadden Dunnett Cavell Cooper Sinclair Roper Rutledge Brown Moore Morton. Morton chairs the committee and F W Morton is secretary.
Extreme cold last week prevented the Wilkie School short courses for farmers from being held last Thursday to Saturday. Attendance was practically nonexistent as one course canceled and others could not proceed. Temperatures ranged from 40 to 60 degrees below zero making travel and attendance impossible.
A Red Cross bulletin urges volunteers to supply unlimited quantities of garments for hospitals and servicemen. The local committee reports garments cut and ready for sewing, with Mrs Laycock able to supply work as demand grows, and asks residents to spare time weekly to help those risking their liberty.
Minutes from the Berst Municipality of Buffalo No. 409 dated February 1917 note approval of the Jan 2 meeting, grants of 300 dollars to the Wilkie Agricultural Society and 100 dollars for gopher prize funds, a recommendation to join the Association of Rural Municipalities, monthly meetings on the first Monday, delegates to the Rural Municipalities Convention in Saskatoon March 7 with 25 dollars each, 1917 assessor C. H. Martin at 75 dollars, printing all bylaws, weed inspector D. C. McWhirter with 1916 conditions, and bills approved through March 5, 1917.
Ratepayers are urged by the Council to send complaints to the office about weed inspection during 2017. The note asks residents to report areas overlooked by the weed inspector and to describe weed problems in their locale to aid the effort.
The annual Canadian Red Cross listing shows Wilkie and surrounding towns pledging funds. Regina leads donors with $7 804 66, while Lloydminster contributes $3 612 45 and Grenfell $2 118 49, totaling 177 towns and cities.
