Former Royal Navy employee E. Bannan now in the Royal Canadian Navy writes from Halifax about an ammunition ship explosion that devastated half the city. He recalls windows breaking, over a thousand dead, many wounded, ships struck, a large portion of the city burned, martial law, and his narrow escape.
Unionist observers weighed Russell Hartney’s address at the big Non-mon gathering held Saturday evening in the Elite Theatre. Reactions highlighted his arguments on unionism and postwar policy, with attendees noting his sharp critique of current leadership and call for stronger collective action.
At the December meeting held at Mrs P P Ellis home the Bloxam Auxiliary voted to sell tickets for a towel raffle. Proceeds go to Red Cross work with tickets 10 cents and the drawing set for December 22 at the Elite Theatre. Towels on display at Thompson's Jewelry. next meeting December 26 at Miss Campbells Apartments.
Notice reminds Victory Loan subscribers to surrender provisional receipts to banks when the next statement is due on January 2, enabling delivery of scrip certificates to subscribers. Eastbound trains are crowded with excursionists as extra coaches fill to capacity before Saskatoon. the train now has eleven coaches.
W G Sherwood swept all dreamed poultry prizes and the Imperial Oil special in Wilkie seed fair. He also won best dressed hog and refused 25c a pound from McKinnon and Co. Mr Speers of Scott earned best bushel of Marquis wheat. The fair showed poor interest overall. Also an order bans Canadian forces from drinking in US venues while in uniform. CPR embargo confines Alberta wheat to mills only.
Mrs. Wm. Whelpton for the Wilkie Red Cross Society lists donations from various supporters including socks, pyjamas, and linen. Names such as Mrs. McRae, Mrs. Bensingthwaite, Mrs. Hewitson, Mrs. Garthe, Mrs. Porter, and others are thanked for multiple items.
Dr R A McLarg quotes G Wright formerly Anglican minister at Wilkie now serving as a Montres regiment chaplain. Wright says he trained for infantry and received a Lieutenant commission on September 2 and later moved to chaplaincy. He notes visiting four Wilkie boys and expresses eagerness to return to work despite heavy duties.
Knox Church announces a Sunday evening Christmas service with special music. The morning topic is The Rise of Jerusalem. Sunday school starts at 2 30.
The Unionist candidate IL C Wright leads in the riding with roughly 186 polls reporting and a majority of about 2300 votes. Willkie ballots show H O Wright leading by 117, and Landis tally 40 to 37 in Wright’s favor. A list of polling sub-divisions follows.
CPR will supply town water from mains near Empire Hotel using a new 25 000 gallon tank near the coal dock with pumping from the town plant. Daily usage is estimated at 70 000 gallons requiring two fill pumps. A deep well drill was started but paused for winter. The service aims to prevent hydrant freezing during winter and early spring.
