Secret French recruitment plot uncovered in 18th century letters
Jonathan Britain, born in Yorkire, served in Mordaunts dragoons and rose to serjeant paymaster. He allied with Perre Riggers in Glouceshire to recruit Englishmen for the French service by promises of French pay and liberty. Fifty to sixty men were shipped to France over months, with Britain receiving a shilling daily as part of the scheme.
