Sydney. Three race horses were burned to death at Newcastle training stables. A fourth was badly injured. Inkpen, the trader, attempted rescues and received head burns, taken to hospital. A large crowd watched as men tried to help. flames spread quickly and most left. The trainer’s burns are serious and he remains in hospital for some time.
Willis campaigns in the Bulli by election urging resistance to the Trades Hall Inner Group. He targets Lang and argues freeing the Labour movement from its grip would release political souls. The by election focus centers on Willis and endorsed Labour hopeful Mr. Sweeney, aged 70, chosen despite local elector feelings.
The chairman of the New South Wales Hospitals Commission Dr Colvin MLC proposes a chain of large central hospitals to serve country centres and avoid sending urgent or costly cases to Sydney. He notes many instances require rapid care or are unaffordable for patients, insisting central specialist facilities are necessary and that the commission's recommendation may influence government action.
Theodore Knoll, a German fisherman, saw his boat overturned by a sudden squall near Stephens Island, South Australia, yesterday week. He swam two miles through shark-infested waters to the Mand where he was found yesterday in a very exhausted condition after surviving a week on bad potatoes found on the island.
Early today at the Texaco oil depot in Medlow Bath a man knocked the depot gate and stones rained on a tin roof. Three men approached the office. two fled, a shot wounded one, and a bystander restrained the other with the butt of a gun. The injured man and the detained suspect were later handed to police. The manager John Muir and his brother Hector held the scene as the patrols arrived. The depot has recently suffered prior intrusions. Local hockey events and a charity bull sale are planned for King’s Birthday week.
A railway accident in Derbyshire leaves Sydney Monctor Derbyshire severely injured after being struck by a train between platforms. He suffered a fatal head injury described as nearly severed, with gruesome details noted in early reports.
Canberra reports that about 14 million pounds is planned for the next financial year but the exact allocation cannot be fixed until the budget is debated. Expenditure on defences has been kept to a minimum in recent years, but now the time is seen as ripe to maintain existing defences. Alexander Best manager of Shaw's Bakery Alphington Melbourne was robbed of about £300 on Saturday night as three men on bicycles demanded money. Best resisted and two shots were fired missing him but injuring Mrs Florence Ingleman standing nearby. Best rushed to aid her and the raiders escaped. Police thoroughly investigated and an arrest expected.
The cattle market remained firm as 1950 head were yarded at Mt Homebush. Bullocks sold from £5 to £10, cows £3 to £8, best beef up to 30s, good quality to 26s, medium to 22s, inferior to 20s. Sheep 27 000 penni t sold firm with ewes 5s to 18s, lambs 7s to 17s, shorn sheep 4s to 10s.
The Sydney produce rules list quoted prices for potatoes onions maize and other staples with ranges for Tasmanian potatoes and oats hay lucerne and wheat. A separate note reports London safety measures with Westminster street cleaners given white jackets for visibility and protection.

Reginald Lord, licensee of the Evelegh Hotel at Redfern, was held up on Saturday night as five men forced him against a wall and stole a quantity of beer and spirits. The intruders then escaped in a car.
A Swansea boy on his thirteenth birthday was struck by a car in Swansea. He lived at a house numbered thirteen, and the car’s registration began with thirteen. The coincidence is noted in the report of the incident.
Two Lamrock sisters were struck by a motor car in Brighton Melbourne late at night. One sister died while the other escaped with slight injuries. A second accident in South Melbourne left a man E O Cole and an unidentified woman in critical hospital condition with slim chances of recovery. A witness praised the miraculous escape of one sister.
The forecast calls for fine conditions along the coast and in the southwestern part of the state with unsettled weather elsewhere bringing showers and some thunderstorms. Snow is expected on the southern highlands with fresh to strong north west to south west winds and squalls along the coast. Temperature today reached 52 degrees.
