In Melbourne at Canterbury Soldiers Memorial Hall Prime Minister Menzies told 98 returning servicemen that the British Empire would unite for a vast defensive effort if attacked but would not unite to commit aggression. He warned Australians may overestimate their own standards and labeled dissenters as in error.

Police recovered his body from the radiator area after he fainted and the vehicle drifted with his head beneath the water.
