Wellington Race Club held a meeting with record field sizes forcing two divisions in two races. Seven races attracted 62 horses, averaging nearly nine per race, with two events each hosting 13 starters.
In a strong day of racing Comedy Belle owner Mr and Mrs Miller with jockey L Smith captured the main 7 furlong Handicap ahead of Prince Celle. New divisions produced Salvador and Anode winning while Grand Manner clinched the Welter Handicap in a tight finish.
Wellington hosts a Coronation week push with a school appeal and new displays. The Chamber of Commerce secures broad support for festive decorations as a military and civilian procession is planned with notable guests and local appointments discussed.
Secretary J Warren Price announced strong public backing for the June 2 procession. Leaders Dr N D Barton and Mr B Hennessey, veterans of the Australian detachment in London for King George VI’s coronation, will ride in Light Horse uniforms. Barry Taylor MBE will ride with Rotor’s title, followed by three girls in red white and blue tunics. Children on horseback and in costumes will fill the rest of the lineup, with Miss Lane reporting 300 children ready to march.
The Rodeo Committee postponed their meeting due to conflicts with other events. Secretary G F Solomon announced the testing notices had been sent to members and interested parties. The meeting will now take place next Monday night May 25 at the Agricultural Hall at 8 o'clock. He urged attendees to note the new date.
