Soldiers Carnival Charms Community In Long City Parade

A lengthy procession and carnival drew thousands for a Soldiers Carnival honoring fallen servicemen. Proceeds fund a Book of Remembrance and a memorial club conversion. Floats, stalls, and open air acts filled Swift Street and Perey Street with crowds, school groups, and local organizations showcasing community pride.

New Parking Rules Enforced In Wellington Town

The Wellington Municipal Council has erected signs for new parallel parking rules across town streets. Sergeant Kenny said motorists have a fortnight to adjust before enforcement. Offenders from tomorrow will be reported to the Department and actions follow. Arthur Street is declared parallel parking only.

Pig Industry Plight Urges Government Action In Australia

Mr J Howse Liberal member for Calare urged urgent federal inquiry into the pig industry decline in Australia. He said many responsible for the drop are Government controlled and bacon curing faces serious trouble. He noted NSW 1947-42 pig production fell from 737,900 to 404,924 and warned a 66 percent rise is needed to reach peak output. The sector, linked to dairy, involved about 166,000 dairy farmers amid broader production issues and rising costs. The push included expanding subsidies and addressing price controls and a redrawing of market signals to curb black market dealings and encourage farmers to repurchase breeding stock.

Proposed School Repairs Move Forward in Two Districts

State Member Mr C G Robertson MLA announced approval for funding of repairs at Wellington High and Arthurville Public Schools. Local tenderers will carry out work including window and desk replacements as part of the education department plan.

Broken Hill Pilot Missing From Corditon Flight

One of the local Highs pilots has been missing since Saturday afternoon on a solo flight from Corditon, South Australia to Chiffon Mills ninety miles west. Mr Nick Porteh, 26, was flying the Tiger Moth. AAP Mosquito planes joined yesterday in the search and a further search will be continued today.

Swimming Point Score Races Held At Wellington Baths

Junior and senior handicap swimming ran Sunday at Wellington baths. The Junior 50 yards was won by ER Armstrong in 27 seconds with BR Lou Sick at 326 seconds and G Payne at 9 seconds. The senior 90 yards saw W Reid win in 29.6 seconds, Drag second in 27.6 and R Tuck third in 30 seconds.

Recent donations to the Soldiers' Memorial Fund push the total to well over £1000. Mr. A. C. Paige told the Times of the league's deep appreciation for the generous response and said further contributions are promised with another list to be published later.

A severe fire on Hobart waterfront destroyed three quarters of Ocean Pier with damage estimated over £250000. Firefighters faced a collapse threat as portions of the pier gave way and a shipment of apples worth about £50000 was ruined before dawn.

Negotiations on Site for New District Hospital

The Hospitals Commission awaited advice from the Valuer General on negotiations to purchase the proposed site for Wellington’s new District Hospital at the corner of Maxwell and March Streets. Minister for Health Mr Kelly said the Valuer General would expedite negotiations.
