Wellington Jockey Club to Elect Officers at Annual Meeting
Members are urged to attend the Wellington Jockey Club annual meeting at Fore Council Chambers on Monday night. The financial position will be presented and officers for the coming year elected amid discussion of other important business. The club reports two successful years, credit to a hardworking committee. Canterbury races drew a large crowd with notable wagering, especially country-owned horses Wallington and Bathurst. Bra mel, Norman Smith’s colt, won Park Stakes second division in fine style by two lengths, and was favored throughout. Ted McMenamin rode Bramel for Sydney connections, while Wallington and Bathurst had heavy betting support. Royal Promise continued his price-getting form in hurdle events at Canterbury, finishing second as The Freak claimed victory. Verde’s bid for third showed cautious racing, and Water Waggon upset punters with a 20 to 1 outcome. Tapestry’s win hit bookmakers hard, prompting heavy betting and future interest. Astridgs won the Ladies’ Briveler for amateur riders, with Sir Robert close behind. Hamural’s victory in the Doncaster Handicap at Randwick, and Doomben’s Newmarket, highlighted a strong sprint field, including Aurie’s Star and Mala among others. Pooley Bridge maintains top Grand National Hurdle odds, with Spear Chief and Doomben Cup doubtful starters. The Grand Prix de Paris saw Nearcor, ridden by Gubellini, defeat Bob Roursel in Langchamps.

Peculiar Accident Death of Robert Kerr in Concord West
The coroner ruled the death of 85 year old Robert Kerr as accidental after a June 8 hospital death. He was struck on Pit Street when a wheel detached from a car driven by John Clifton. Evidence indicated a mechanic may have failed to tighten nuts after replacing the wheel. An earlier horse race at Canterbury Park drew scrutiny from owners and the AJC, with a formal inquiry postponed to today.
