False Cheque Charge Heard in Wellington Petty Sessions
Wellington solicitor Mr. B. McCormack presented a case against William Achit Arrowsmith charged with false pretences to gain 5 pounds 10 shillings from Emmanuel Cassidy of the Olympic Club. Arrowsmith pleaded guilty, was ordered to enter into a 50 pound recognizance for twelve months, and witnesses testified that the cheque was written under a fictitious name but the money was repaid. The magistrate rejected viewing it as a mere practical joke and noted the defendant admitted writing the cheque and signing a fictitious name.
