The Dora Gresle Post Office in the Newcastle district was broken into yesterday morning. Explosives shattered the door and the cash box containing 17 pounds was stolen. The explosion was heard about half a mile away.

James Leighton Massey aged 21 was hanged at Long Bay Penitentiary at 8 30 am for the murder of Norman Stead in a Darlinghurst gar age on February 10. He told officials yesterday he regreted the crime and hoped his death would serve as a warning to youths. Doctor Watson, Massey’s spiritual adviser, called him brave and penitent with a genuine wish to atone.

A car crash on Narromine Road near Dubbo last night killed J Lorbout aged 58 of Waterloo station near Narromine and injured passenger Stanley Dean. The car tyre burst at about 8 15 pm near the 11 miles peg, tipping the vehicle. Another passenger William Mahony escaped unharmed. Jordan a farm labourer, died instantly from a fractured skull. Dean sustained fractured ribs shock and abrasions and was admitted to the district hospital.
A cold morning in Sydney saw a low of 47.0 for the hour, the year’s lowest so far. Snow fell on the coast as a strong south westerly wind caused ships to struggle. Widespread rain was reported over the weekend.
Sydney Monday report states Henry Francis Joseph Maudlin aged 37 goes on trial for the murder of Charles Dawson. Crown alleges Dawson shot, body dumped in a well and buried. Maudlin’s counsel cites insanity as defense with impaired mind claimed at the time of the act. Evidence was entered.
