The Federal Spirit in Melbourne and New South Wales

A lengthy provincial piece argues against disunion and defends federation. It credits patient union work, notes opposition from Melbourne and Sydney factions, and critiques the Melbourne press while urging loyalty to the federal idea amid economic strains and political tensions.

Political turmoil and graft allegations plague leadership

A garbled but eventful report outlines intense political infighting over ores and trade, alleging that a premier candidate faces scrutiny and backlash from rival factions. The piece accuses a prominent politician of weaponizing party planks to stay afloat, while critics decry federation’s supposed failures and judicial entanglements.
