A gloom fell on the community when John Rich of Montenores Street Wellington died quietly at home. Known for wit and kindness, he loved Hawera and his garden, with family near him in his final hours. The funeral, arranged by Murray Brothers, drew a large Wellington crowd and a long cortege in the Baptist section. His survivors include his wife and three sons.
