Violent attack on Tumut clerk leads to fatal injuries

Micha Junior Downing a 40 year old Tumut clerk died in Tumut Hospital after a violent assault at Wool Pack Hotel on Saturday night. He suffered a broken jaw, head wounds, chest bruises and arm injuries. Police were questioning a man with no arrest yet. Detective Sergeant Allmond from Sydney took charge of inquiries.

Victoria Leads NS W in Sheffield Shield Clash at Sydney

Victoria holds a comfortable lead over New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground as fast bowler Scott dominates with seven wickets for 43 in NS W’s innings. NS W was 120 all out, with A G Cheetham and Fleetwood Smith among the names. Victoria replied 269 with Gregory and Hassnett contributing notable scores.

Woman Surrenders at Darlinghurst Charged With Abandoning Son

A 23 year old single woman entered Darlinghurst Police Station and confessed to abandoning her three year old son. She claimed she wandered streets day and night with the baby, found a vacant cot at a home in Erskineville, and placed the child there believing it would be better cared for.

Drowned Brothers in Phillip Bay Yacht Mishap

Two brothers, Jack O'Donnell and Edward Donnell aged 34 and 28, were washed from a small yacht in Phillip Bay during heavy seas. Jack dived to save Edward. both men disappeared and their bodies have since been recovered.

In Sydney on Monday the Rev F H Raynard told a Central Methodist Mission congregation that drinking among women and girls has startlingly risen. He cited visible intoxication in the early hours and urged girls to separate themselves from those engaging in such behavior.

The Defence Department asked the States Clothing Factory in Sydney to manufacture 14009 miltitia tunics and 16000 khaki trousers for infantry defence, but orders could not be accepted due to department supply constraints. The state government is now considering enlarging the factory.

Marooned in Trees After Flood Rescue in Queensland

In Central Queensland the Moura district party of eight men left camp Saturday night fearing floods and were later found marooned in trees. Claude Widduss, 45, and his mate Thomas Doherty, 38, were rescued by boat after being swept by water and receiving a severe shock. A separate note reports an electrical accident at the Hume Steel Company foundry where a mechanic was electrocuted.
