Sydney broadcast quotes Minister for External Affairs Mr Hughes urging Australia to defend democracy and confront dictatorships. He warned gravity of the nation’s position and the need for swift action to save democracy, suggesting war could be inevitable if dictatorships prevail.
Forecast says fine in Riverina while other areas stay cloudy and unsettled. Rain and thunderstorms develop with possible heavy falls and local squalls. Inland regions turn warm to hot and sultry. Winds moderate to fresh along coast with choppy seas.
The government will give special consideration to the financial position of the state railways facing increased energy costs. A substantial improvement in railway finances is noted and action will be necessary to provide more revenue for the department, possibly through fare and freight increases or alternative measures.
At the Sports Ground last night a midget car caught fire during a practice run. The driver, Douglas Douglas, 27, sustained burns to both hands and legs as he was signaling to retire before the meeting began.

Robert Gaale, 23, labourer, is remanded on 200 bail in Sydney Central Court on charges of demanding money with menace from Florence Seokee with intent to steal, unlawfully asserting a weapon, and assaulting Molly Sullivan while armed. Police say he brandished a revolver in the street and threatened harm to any who interfered.
Mrs Mona Beatrice O'Brien of Waterloo died after her husband, a motor mechanic, found her in his workshop with a cup to her lips and saying You're too late. She collapsed and died soon after at hospital. Police suspect poisoning. She was recently low in spirits and was mother of six with another child expected next month.
