Sydney police report a stabbing at a Revesby house last night. Eric Leonard Nye, aged, was wounded in the chest with a small potato knife. Maiste Nye was later charged with feloniously wounding her husband.
Sydney reports Albert Earle aged 43 had a miraculous escape when he fell into a 120 ft lift well from the 13th floor of a building in Philip Street. He struck a water pipe and was deflected to safety on the 12th floor, hospitalized with spine internal and head injuries. Earle cannot recall the accident and calls himself the luckiest man alive.
Mr Tom Darey an elderly pensioner was found dead near his camp at Warren due to heart trouble. He is survived by five sons and a daughter. The death occurred at his daughter Mrs B Pack's home in Mudgee. Other notices: Mr John Page aged 82 and Mr Edwin Page of Bathurst aged 100. A marriage took place at Holy Trinity Church Dubbo. The death of Mr W C Packham from Manila ra and Molong districts is noted. his wife predeceased him and a son was killed in the Great War.
A cobbled mix of items reports King George VI grants relief funds through a £100 donation for bushfire victims. Also listed are engagements and weddings in Mudure sutterers and Portland, the deaths of Mrs. Martha Ellen Fardell and Miss Alma Florence Kennedy, and a quiet church wedding between Florence Tranter and Richard Maher at St Lawrence Church.
A Times correspondent in Paris reports that France will inform General Franco of immediate uncontradicted recognition. The decision, to be endorsed by the cabinet, reflects Paris moving to acknowledge Franco today.
Muriel Mindin Saywell testified that her husband Frank Horace Saywell a Sydney dentist claimed assets worth about £250000 and that he surpassed five top NSW taxpayers. Saywell countered that his income was under £25000. The divorce case proceeds.
Clive Johnson a 27 year old ufologist and two oil prospectors were interrogated for two days in a shallow cave by hostile New Guinea head hunters. They were driven off by a police ranch party. Johnson was struck in the leg by a poisoned spear during the attack. Two ringleaders were shot.
The woman found at the foot of Bondi cliffs was identified as Hilda Jane Barber, 57, of Hornsby. In a letter to her family she wrote that she could not endure further sleepless nights and that by the time her relatives received it they would know she would not return home.
The Sydney wheat market eased with bulk Yamson parcels at 2/68 per bushel and bagged lots at 2/59. Tasmanian potatoes ranged 12 to 18, butter 16 ½d, cheese 10 4d to 11d, honey 24d to 6d, maize 4/9 to 6, onions 22, millet up to 45, chaff 4/9 to 5/6, oaten 4/9 to 8, lucerne 4/6 to 6/9, tay oaten 8 to 9.
At Homebush today 2800 head of cattle yarded with market unchanged. Bulls sold £6 to £14, cows £4 to £14, best beef 40s, good 38s, medium 30s, others to 28s. Sheep 28,000 penned. wethers 10s to 19s, ewes 18s to 16s, lambs 13s to 26s.
Reports indicate a vessel was torpedoed by a submarine and sinking off Portis Hand picked area. A call sign PEC may be linked, though not in the marina registry. The British tanker Pectin left Trinidad February 8 and was due at Southampton Sunday.
Minister for Defence Mr Street pledged to complete the governments sixty three million pound defence programme by June 1941. He warned delays would be cut through by new methods and stressed over two thirds of the funds would be spent locally on Navy and land forces. The pace after June 1941 would depend on national and international conditions.
