About 300 Wellington and district residents gathered at the Methodist Hall last Monday night to protest the Council’s decision to grant Cameron Park land to the Wellington Bowling Club for a new green. The meeting was raucous with persistent heckling from many attendees.
A 1318 pound freak mushroom was found by Lew Syphers of Dripstone Post Office. It measured eight to eight and a half inches across the cap and stood about six inches high, with a four inch thick stem. The mushroom was brought to the Times office for viewing. A council meeting on a contentious motion drew a packed hall, lively and noisy, with speakers evenly split on the issue.
Mr. Des Rowe of Dornlen mourns the loss of about 700 Merino weaners valued around £300 after a contour bank collapse sent floodwater into a gully. Neighbouring properties suffered fencing and paddock damage as a miniature lake formed on the plough paddock, with heavy rain reported across the district.

The Wellington Rugby League revealed last Wednesday that last year’s profit was £217 18s 9d, not £222 18s 9d, after £100 prize money for Saturday afternoon competition was paid from the general fund instead of a special account. Assets as of February 5 show Savings Bank general account £150, Saturday prizemoney £101 2s, investment £81 15s 5d, with total £350 17s 5d. A £200 portion is to be paid to players and £40 to the hospital, leaving a base balance of £217 1s 5d. other assets are valued at £240 and £290, plus additional items.

Gold nuggets discovered at Stuart Town by Me Jack Rich and his daughter Mrs J B Jones. Largest nugget weighed 29 pennyweights. others 5 and 28 pennyweights. Rich plans to sell to a Sydney firm, but keep some as souvenirs. Old goldfields nearly deserted. occasional prospectors and small nugget finds by residents.
