Fight for Rome: German assaults repulsed at Anzio beachhead

Allied positions south of Rome held firm as heavy German attacks were beaten back. Allied air forces flew about 1500 sorties with roughly 60 enemy raids. 21 enemy planes were downed while one Allied plane is missing. One hundred Flying Fortresses bombarded Monte Cassino, striking the Benedictine monastery, which had been fortified by Germans. Despite a papal appeal to spare the site, military necessity forced the assault. A 44 hour truce on the Fifth Army front allowed German casualties to be gathered.
