Aquitania to carry British migrants to Australia

Canberra reports that immigration minister Calwell said negotiations to charter the liner Aquitania have nearly finished. The ship, of about 4,786 tons, will sail first in mid May under a two year charter to the Commonwealth Government. It can carry about 2000 per voyage, with pressure to raise to 3000, offering minimal comforts as Australia seeks to boost migration.

At the Welling ton branch meeting of the G U O O F Bathurst District visitors included District Secretary P Gawchet and Mrs Gauchet of Lithgow and L R Watts of Orange. Watts spoke on the Grand United Centenary Centre and other matters. The district secretary presented a cup for a 24 percent annual increase in 1945. Refreshments followed before visitors departed. the cup will be displayed in Fulton's for members unable to attend.

Nova Disaster Survivor Sentenced for Vagrancy

James Leslie Cash identified as sole survivor of the Nova disaster in Bundaberg drift from Australia to New Caledonia. He claimed the role at Police Court yesterday and was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for vagrancy after pestering passersby for money.

D Rosen disqualified after Yass Races scandal

David Rosen, lessee-owner of Scarlet Main, was banned for six months by the Southern Districts Racing Association steward T Bradfield for alleged improper practices at the Yass Diggers Races on November 28. Scarlet Main died on the course. two other horses recovered. Rosen, a Wellington trainer, plans to appeal and now resides at Bendick Murrell.

Only two Wellington swimmers at Parkes carnival

At the Western District Swimming Championship held in Parkes last Saturday the Parkes team won the Nanima Cup and the McGlynn Cup with a touch over Forbes. Wellington had no representatives. only John Wallis and Doug McGill attended. Wallis placed third in the men's 100 yards, behind Coulston of Parkes and Boyle of Dubbo. The Western Districts Diving Championships will be held in Wellington on March 1.

Mysterious Poisoning of Cattle Shocked Apsley Farmer

Arsenic poisoning was found to kill six cows on New Year's Day at G C Mick Willie’s dairy farm in Apsley. Stomach contents were sent to Sydney for analysis, confirming arsenic as the cause. The farmer, Mr Willis, cannot identify the source. No additional herd deaths have occurred since.

Alderwoman Candidate Seeks Mudgee Council Seat

A well known Mudgee woman plans to contest the December council selections. She says women have too long been led by men and that with women outnumbering men locally they should be proportionally represented by women on the council.
