Bush fires threaten town as fighters rush from Yass
In the Canberra district bush fires spread under strong winds. Fire crews rushed from Yass to tackle two outbreaks bearing on the town. An Allied serviceman was killed and a girl was critically injured when they fell 360 feet down a cliff near St Clair Auckland New Zealand. Police were alerted after midnight and a constable was lowered to reach them at dawn. Neither victim has been identified.
