In Sydney on Monday the voters of Goulburn debated a referendum to ban or permit Sunday sport within the municipality. The polls showed 1398 voting against while many refrained from giving an opinion. The result is considered not a true measure of public opinion and another referendum may be held later.
The Hon B S Stevens, British Premier, is expected to leave for England in April and return after the current parliamentary session ends. The session, likely to conclude Wednesday, will shift the focus to a mid February start for the new fellow. Travel through the town is heavy as residents head toward the metropolis for Xmas shopping and events.
A notice warns trespassers near Neuren and the NEUREAITE area will be prosecuted. B Barton and D H Barton caution trespassers and shooters on private property. The Goulburn vote and resident views on Sunday court and weekend sport ignite a public debate about Christian worship and community concerns.
Melbourne conference of fifteen unions in the Australian Congress of Trade Unions decides against backing the seamen strike. Seamen's Union secretary Col McCol Johnson warns the movement cannot rely on other unions or the government, urging leaders to seek resolution through arbitration. Government says it may issue water front licenses, potentially using non union labour, if the strike continues.
A Rockhampton Aerial Service Ltd plane crashed into the sea at Caloundra Queensland in a blinding rainstorm. Pilot A Sponze escaped serious injury and the damaged craft, loaded with newspapers, was towed ashore after Taural life saving members rescued the pilot from the water. The pilot said he was blinded by the driving rain and had no idea where he was.
Forecast calls for scattered rain and thunderstorms across the north coast and tablelands with heavy falls and severe local gusts in the northeast. Elsewhere remains fine and warm to hot with fresh northwesterly winds, some dust in the west, and cooler spells in the southwest as activity trails off.
Sydney reports the cricket match resumed this morning with Australia finishing first innings at 228. Euston reached 5, Ebeling and Parkes each claimed several wickets, while Holmes, Simms, Hum an, and Bixler contributed with multiple dismissals. In MGC’s second innings Smith fell, Parkes and Ebeling added more wickets, and Hardstaff and Barber remained batting as the innings stood at 45 with two wickets down.

Frederick Bennett, 13, plunged 180 feet from a rock ridge near the suspension bridge at Middle Harbour. Ambulance teams faced a rough ascent through bush and rocks to reach him. He landed on broken rocks, suffering severe arm injuries, deep lacerations, and heavy bleeding, with a classmate providing initial first aid.
A Fokker monoplane with five passengers made a forced dawn landing on a beach near South Rocks en route from Coff's Harbour to Sydney. The hull struck sand, passengers escaped, three clung to the wing for two hours until 15 locals towed the craft ashore. Flight Lieutenant I Reece suffered a broken leg, others uninjured.
The Homebush sales today saw 8820 head of cattle helped by a firm market. Bullocks sold from 5 to £14, cows 4 to 10, beef 88d to 2s 8d, good quality 30s, medium 25s, inferior 23s. Sheep 70,000 penned, market firm. Wethers 12d to 22d, ewes 8d to 18d, lambs 10d to 26d.
The Trautwein tax appeal resumed at the High Coast today. A £25 cheque was deposited drawn in the name of Theodore Charles Trautwein and signed by his sister Mrs. Chapman of the North Star Hotel. The payment was handed to Mr. Whiddon, former Commissioner of taxation.
Lestie Wesley a 33 year old railway employee of Grafton was killed instantly when a loaded rifle exploded after he knocked it from his shoe while removing cinders. He reportedly stumbled and fell causing the weapon to discharge into his stomach.
The death occurred at the home of her daughter Mrs F Batho on Friday. Mrs Mary Ellen King wife of the late William Tomes King predeceased by about eight weeks. Survived by six sons and five daughters. Sons include Arthur William Samuel Ernest Frederick. Daughters include Elizabeth Elizabeth Batho Batho Batho Alice King. Remains in polished oak casket laid to rest in Wellington Cemetery Methodist section after graveside service by Rev R B S Taylor. Funeral arrangements by J Thompson and Son.
Tasmanian commodities list prices for staple goods including potatoes at 8 to 10 shillings, butter 142 shillings 6 pence, cheese Sid to 10d, honey 3d to 42d, maize 5 to 6 shillings, oats 2 to 2 shillings 6 pence, onions 8 shillings, millet 20 to 25 shillings, wheaten 4/8 to 4/9, oaten 3/0 to 4/0, lucerne 4 shillings to 7 shillings, wheat 3/6.
No fresh developments this morning as fifty three vessels remain tied up. Mass meetings are planned in Brisbane and Melbourne while the central strike committee meets in Sydney. Vessels from other States were tied up on arrival. Melbourne mass meeting supports continuing the strike despite the Federal Government’s licensing regulations ultimatum to be gazetted tomorrow.
In the Licensing Court proceedings the Trautwein hotel license application is challenged in the Husttone Park or Croydon Park district where Whidden resides. The case centers on whether the license should be granted given local conditions and Whidden’s residence.
