Wellington Musical Society Revival Triumphs

Enthusiastic reception last night celebrated a triumphant revival of choral work under conductor Mrs. R Dodd at the Parish Hall. The performance featured choirs, duets and solos with Mrs Dodd and pianist Mr T Stemmett receiving special acclaim and the society president presenting tokens of appreciation. The event highlighted Mrs Dodd as a remarkable conductress and soloists including Miss Wilga Pruden and Mrs Millen, with the WIHS members and local officials contributing to a memorable evening.

Cyclone Hits Darwin Island Areas Causing Widespread Damage

A cyclone struck Darwin yesterday destroying many houses and public buildings and delaying marine and air traffic. The cyclone moved southwest along a 300 mile front. Melville Island natives suffered heavy damage. radio failure hindered damage assessment. F May, Director of Native Affairs, will fly to Melville Island to assess and evacuate if needed. Dozens of small harbour craft were damaged at their moorings.

Referendum on Amalgamation Likely at Molong

Molong Municipal Council moved to hold a referendum on whether Molong Municipality should amalgamate with Awaroo Shire. Inquest Postponed Into Death of Wel lington Worker

The inquest into the death of Joseph Patrick Rodden, a seasonal worker of Clairville Cobborn Road Wellington, was adjourned after one witness testified. Coroner J P Dowd delayed the hearing due to inability to subpoena further witnesses. Rodden, 54, born in Orange, unmarried, and owning no property, died after a car struck him in Lee Street last Friday. The driver, Aive Haseniam of Post Office Garage Dubbo, was involved. Rodden died at District Hospital at 3 am Sunday after not regaining consciousness.

No Decision for Le Callien Appeal

In Sydney on Thursday the mother and brothers of Charles Je Gallien who was yesterday sentenced to life for the murder of his father Louis Gallien have not yet decided if an appeal will be made. Richard Je Gallien said none of them had seen Charles since the sentence and they were surprised by the verdict.

Harvest Progress and Silos Operations In Wellington District

Harvesting in the Wellington district runs a small swing over the past fortnight with wheat around 6% over the tushes. Weather remains excellent and officials expect completion by New Year as McLeod’s Mill reports good quality wheat and smoother handling after last year’s wet season. Silos receiving wheat daily this week, open 7 am to 6 pm except weekends, with 12 to 1 pm lunch break. Largest single load reached about 21 tons grown by Whale and Mason of Spicer’s Creek, transported 26 miles by N. Chick of Gulgong. Silos hold 50 000 bushels with room for 200 000. weekly intake about 4 500 bags. Murumfoung reports silos capacity 97 000 bushels fallen. McLeod’s Mill receiving about 4 000 bags daily. wheat averaging 2 lbs per bushel with some pinching signs from heat. A. Harvey notes 20 000 bags delivered in past fortnight. quality remains excellent.
