First Railway in Australia Opens in 1854

The Sydney to Parramatta Junction line was constructed by the Sydney, Parramatta, Richmond, and Windsor Railway Company. The first sod was struck on July 3, 1850, work finished September 3, 1855, and the line opened September 26, 1855, over a year after Melbourne to Sandridge began. The original locomotive from England broke down due to bad coal, with service continued by a pile-driving engine fitted to a truck. The company also built its first engine in Australia within ten weeks.
