Festival Week plans shaped at Wellington meeting

A large town and district gathering in the Royal Hotel last Tuesday shaped a six day Wellington Festival Week from September 20 to 25. The programme includes a visit by Governor General McKell a £1 000 race meeting a vice regal ball and a Queen competition aimed at raising funds for debentures and showground improvements. Sub committees were set to organise carnival gymkhana and stalls with entertainment devices proposed by McIntosh and Bourke. The vice regal ball is set for Monarch Hall with 10/6 tickets, and arrangements for a civic reception and school sports were approved. A next meeting is scheduled for August 4 in the Royal Hotel.

Railway Porter Narrow Escape at Maxwell Street Crossing

A railway porter named King narrowly escaped serious injury when a truck struck the Maxwell Street crossing gates he was closing. The collision threw him onto the tracks as an oncoming train approached, but he leaped to safety with minor leg injuries. The crossing gate was damaged in the crash.

Balcombe Reports No Net Change in AJIC Finances

President A M Balcombe states AJIC costs held flat despite subsidy cuts and staff pay rises. treasurer J J McPhee notes subsidy trimmed from 1400 to 4400 with salaries up 400. Dr A B Colvin elected patron, succeeding J Kenna. New officers include Colvin president Balcombe vice president and McPhee treasurer. Delegates named from Wellington and surrounding districts. The Lettered Wellington Picnic Race Club is represented.

408 Pigs Yarded at Successful Sale
