Privateer Le Mercure Captured by Phaeton and Anson
The Admiralty reports that on Aug 31 1798 Captain Stopford of His Majesty's ship Phaeton in concert with the Anson captured the French privateer Le Mercure, an 18 gun vessel with 132 men, recently sailed from Bordeaux on a cruise. Subsequent letters note further captures including La Decade and La Colombe, plus notes on other privateers and merchant ship seizures by British squadrons under Sir Thomas Williams Rear-Admiral Harvey and captains Poyntz Mitford Rotherham and others. The communications, dated Sept 1798, detail ongoing efforts to curb French privateering and protect British commerce.
