A 1798 Cornwall broadside urges Labouring Poor and Cornish miners to change wage practices. It condemns Saturday pay and public houses, proposes Friday pay and using miners homes for pay, linking weekly drinking to divine displeasure and Sabbath observance, urging prudent distribution of earnings.
A letter to the editor argues the smoking debate lies between prohibition and indulgence. It defends the Reformed Smoker stance, cites historic use since 1585, and urges moderate, controlled smoking as a civic and religiously permissible habit within limits. It praises tobacco’s perceived moral, social, and public health effects and suggests it can be kept from harming others with windows open.
A fragmentary report recalls a 1798 event at Wexford where rebels fled and men were slain by a bridge. A parish priest cried for mercy and urged the rebels to kneel and pray for the prisoners. The passage mentions Protestant casualties and the crowd reacting to bloodshed.
