Descriptions from Barcelona reveal intensified junta measures, rising unrest, and martial actions against workers and suspected dissent. He served London as alderman in Cripplegate and twice lord mayor, with nine successive parliamentary terms. A Liberal candidate Mr Pattison is expected to stand for the vacancy, while Tory hopes focus on Mr Baring junior or Mr Wolverley Attwood, who has declined to run. James Pattison seen as the likely Liberal nominee, with Pattison praised for business skill and public service.

In Horfield near Bristol, John Clark attacked Joseph Maddocks and his wife and a guest, using tongs and a poker in a premeditated assault. Maddocks and his wife were badly injured, a baby was spared, and three shillings stolen. Clark was committed for trial at Gloucester assizes.
A Lewes merchants meeting backed a railway from Lewes to Hastings with a possible link to Brighton. Plans include a single line Lewes to Hastings and a double line to Brighton, involving surveys, surveys, tunnel work at Falmer, and an estimated £350000 to £400000 funding, with Parliament expected to be asked for next session.
